Introduction

This course is designed to give learners the opportunity to:

Course Content

The BSc (Hons) Accounting and Finance is a 360-credit qualification that consists of core modules and optional modules determined by the college that provide for a combined total of 360 credits. 

Year 1

The first year of the accounting and finance programme covers academic and digital proficiency, alongside foundational knowledge in business law, accounting, and economics to understand the accounting industry. Through the accounting and finance course, you also explore statistical and data analysis techniques, preparing you for advanced study and practical applications in accounting and finance.

Core Modules

The module will equip you to succeed in both your studies and subsequent career. This includes the development of individual non-cognitive intelligence; digital proficiency; and cultural intelligence.

The module aims to enable you to develop an understanding of the basic economic concepts, theories, ideas and tools and their real-world application.

This module will develop and prepare you for entry into the professional workplace or further studies in accounting and finance. As part of this module, you will learn and develop a sound basis of theory and principles, accounting techniques and skills necessary as a foundation for further study and practical experience in accounting.

This module will introduce you to a variety of work organisations. You will also understand and explore the psychological, sociological and economic explanations of human behaviour in organisations.

The module aims to deepen your knowledge of relevant mathematical concepts and statistics used in the business world.

This module will provide you with knowledge of the constitution and forms of business entities. You will understand the relevant principles of UK law and the legislation governing the formation, structure, and operation of a business and its obligations. As part of the module, you will explore the legal obligations of a professional practitioner and of a professional practice in respect of employees. As you study the module and attend the law clinic, you will be able to analyse problems confronting a business, identify applicable legislation and apply appropriate legal principles.

Year 2

In the second year of the accounting and finance course, you deepen your understanding of financial reporting, performance management, and taxation concepts. The accounting and finance programme provides practical experience through internships and real-world applications, while you explore advanced theories and standards essential to the accounting and finance industry, including financial management and international accounting practices.

Core Modules

This module will provide you with the opportunity to document the development of core employability skills and allow you to acquire tangible evidence to support your employability narrative at interviews.

This module will help you to develop and enhance your analytical and critical skills. You will learn and examine financial accounting concepts and international accounting standards. You will also learn key theories and applications of international accounting standards that underpin the latest thinking in the financial accounting area.

This module is intended to introduce you to the ideas and techniques of running a financially successful business. You appreciate and learn that in order to grow and expand, businesses must both find profitable investments and obtain funds to make those investments.

This module will develop your knowledge and understanding of management accounting techniques. You will understand how management accounting techniques can be used to support management in planning, controlling, and monitoring performance in a variety of business contexts.

This module will give you an opportunity to get experience in a practical operational context where you can apply accounting techniques acquired in earlier modules of study.

The module aims to develop your knowledge and understanding of taxation concepts and principles relating to individuals, partnerships, single and groups of companies operating in the UK and overseas business activities.

Year 3

In year 3 of the accounting and finance degree, you focus on advanced topics such as corporate finance, strategic management accounting, and auditing, enhancing your skills for leadership roles in the accounting and finance industry. The accounting and finance programme emphasises ethics, corporate responsibility, and global enterprise, preparing you for real-world problem-solving and consultancy in the dynamic field of accounting and finance.

Core Modules

This module will develop core employability skills and allow you to develop and demonstrate skills in

  1. the analysis of a problem,
  2. planning and organising a task, including time management,
  3. exercising judgement in the light of observed and published data,
  4. compiling a report,
  5. teamwork and collaboration and
  6. use of appropriate technologies.

This module will develop your knowledge and understanding of strategic management accounting.

This module aims to develop your understanding of corporate financial management decisions in the context of profit seeking organisations. You will also have the opportunity to examine and evaluate how such decisions may contribute to maximising shareholder value.

This module will build on your prior year studies and extend your understanding of corporate financial reporting. In particular, you will develop the professional skills to examine and apply consolidation techniques in the preparation and assessment of group accounts. You will develop the analytical skills to solve complex financial reporting problems. You will also have the opportunity and expertise to consider relevant conceptual issues and the application of accounting standards to such issues.

The module aims to develop a critical appreciation of the key principles of business ethics, corporate responsibility/citizenship and sustainability, and the relation of these to the workplace. It will encourage you to critique theories of management and leadership from the perspective of ethics.

The aim of the module is to enable you to appreciate the nature, purposes, and detailed procedures of auditing and its relevance in today’s commercial environment. In particular, the module aims to develop knowledge and understanding of the process of carrying out the assurance engagement and its application in the context of the professional framework.

Age Requirement

At least 18 years old

Academic Requirement

At least GCE ‘A’ Level  (112 UCAS points and above) or equivalent qualification, along with GCSE pass  in both English and Mathematics (at least Grade C).

Exceptional Entry

Applicants may apply on the basis of RPL and RPEL for admission with Credit, subject to the University’s assessment on a case-by-case basis.

English Entry Requirement

Overall IELTS 5.5 with a minimum of 5.5 in all areas, or equivalent qualification.
