Introduction

This course is designed to give learners the opportunity to:

  • Provide students with the opportunity to develop their academic and professional knowledge and skills from a local, national and/or global context in order to meet their academic and professional needs in their chosen field within Education;
  • Engage participants in key educational processes underpinning development and action, such as critical analysis and reflection, critical enquiry and research, action planning and evaluation and collaborative learning that enable education professionals and students to gain greater recognition in their chosen field within Education
  • Enable students to engage in critical academic and practitioner-based (when appropriate) research that is reflective, systematic, and rigorous in their chosen field within Education
Course Content

The Master of Arts Education comprises of five (5) units from the following list determined by the College:

Core Module

This is a compulsory module where you need to demonstrate your skills to undertake a small-scale independent research project relevant to practical educational development in the contect of the participant’s role, practice, or interest.

Option Module determined by the College

This module aims to examine the theory, principles and practices of assessment applied within complex education systems in different country contexts. Assessment is explored through three perspectives; assessment for learning, assessment of learning and assessment as learning. In this way the module develops understanding of the relationship between assessment and learning. The module aims to develop in depth knowledge and understanding of the theory, principles and practices of Assessment for Learning. Students develop critical understanding of the factors that may influence assessment including professional values, reliability and validity as well as the political and economic context.

In this module, you will investigate the theory relating to creativity and imagination, focusing on its implication to education and people’s lives; how theory relates to the wider school context and manifests in classroom practice.

In this module, you will engage with theories of inclusion and personalised learning. You will be invited to critically evaluate personalised learning practice in schools and educational settings while examining and developing approaches to inclusive planning, teaching and assessment that ensures accessibility, challenge and achievability for all pupils. 

This module aims to familiarise you with legislation and current research on equal opportunities in education and analyse inequalities in your educational context. It also seeks to consider strategies for raising the achievement of specific groups of children and focuses on identifying opportunities for improving individual and school practice.

  • To introduce the development of neoliberal capitalism implicating schools and teaching practice.
    To examine the education policy and practice in social democratic and socialist countries as alternative models for teaching practice.
  • To examine changing policy for education and teaching and the teaching profession.
  • To assess the changing curriculum and its links to economy.
  • To identify key influences on education policy for teaching practice.

This module aims to develop knowledge and understanding of strategic action to improve teaching and learning. You will learn about qualitative and quantitative approaches to enquiry, to support educators in leading learning within your professional contexts.

This module aims to support the development of a meaningful understanding of theory, models, purposes and practices of mentoring and/or coaching within an educational context. It will help the participant to develop a critical knowledge, understanding of mentoring and to evaluate its usage for a range of purposes within education.

This module aims to understand the concept of pedagogy in light of relevant theory and practice to evaluate its impact on learning. It focuses on developing an educational model that is appropriate and relevant to individual contexts. It also provides you with the tools to build a systematic framework for addressing specific pedagogical issues arising from your educational practice.

  • To facilitate an understanding of multicultural pedagogies and the ways they can support and enhance the educational engagement of multilingual learners and their peers.
  • To enable the selection and implementation of pedagogic approaches that are appropriate and relevant to the culture of the school, classroom learning environment(s) and pupil demographic.
  • To facilitate the development of a practical framework, derived from academic research, to address issues or concern arising from multicultural professional practice.
Admission Criteria

Age Requirement

At least 20 years old

Academic Requirement

  • Bachelor’s degree with minimum Second Class (2:2) or equivalent in an Education related subject or Upper Second Class (2:1) if subject not Education related.
  • A non-graduate qualification for mature students who are at least 30 years old and with minimum 8 years of working experience.

English Entry Requirement

  • Overall IELTS 7.0 with a minimum of 6.5 in Writing, Speaking, Reading and Listening.
  • or the equivalent qualification.

Exemptions / Credit Transfer / Advanced Standing

Candidates who do not hold such qualifications (i.e.: formal qualifications which marginally fall short of the normal minimum entry requirements) and are at least 30 years old will be assessed as to their suitability through interview, and where necessary the taking of references. They should be compensated for by his/her relevant work experience provided that such candidates have held, for a minimum of eight years, a responsible position which is relevant to the Master’s degree to be pursued.
