Introduction
The programme aims to provide students with a rigorous grounding in the core concepts, knowledge and skills of finance and Risk through the thorough examination of the specialist literature in these areas and the practical use of data collection and analysis. The key objective of the programme is to develop knowledgeable, technically competent and highly employable graduates who are able to critically engage both with core concepts and a diverse set of ideas. While the programme is conceptually driven, it is also pragmatically focussed with a view to teaching concepts that have a high degree of relevance to finance, risk and its regulation, such as professionalism, ethics and risk within the financial sector. The modules will consist of a variety of learning approaches including scheduled lectures and seminars, in-class workshops, computer practicals, Bloomberg trading sessions, case studies and guest lectures from leading practitioners.
The MSc Finance and Risk programme offered at UEL will provide the essential postgraduate skills to those wishing to follow careers in applied finance, investment management, retail or corporate banking as well as those wishing to pursue further research. The programme content is closely mapped to the Chartered Banking Diploma and is accredited by the Chartered Banker Institute (CBI). UEL has close partnership with this professional body.
Course Content
The Master of Science Finance and Risk comprises of six (6) compulsory units from the following list determined by the College:
The purpose of this module is to provide the students with an in-depth understanding of specific issues of finance in a global context.
The module will also enable students to analyse the key financial decisions of a multinational firm when operating in an international setting across a range of financial contexts.
The module also aims to provide students with a theoretical overview and practical understanding of financial securities by focusing on securities markets, important securities that are traded, the mechanism of securities trading, the role of market participants and risks faced by the financial markets participants.
The module fundamentally aims to help students to distinguish between money and capital markets with emphasis on comprehensive understanding of types, characteristics and trading of Bonds and Equities.
The module further offers students’ in-depth understanding of important financial products including Loans, Mortgages and Insurance towards financial investment decision making.
To provide students with an extensive, detailed and critical knowledge and understanding of credit and lending in the banking industry and develop the practitioner’s skills and ability to synthesise complex issues, evaluate information, apply principles and techniques, and make professional judgements and informed decisions in relevant work situations.
In addition, this module introduces the subject of investment management. It illustrates the structure of the course and presents the main ideas and methods in the analysis of financial investment. This includes the main topics of derivative risk management and investment funds and trusts. Moreover, this module also aims at developing students’ understanding of how financial analysts and fund managers select asset management strategies with emphasis on recent developments in global finance.
To provide an extensive, detailed and critical knowledge and understanding of risk management in the banking industry and banking regulations. In addition, to develop the practitioner’s skills and ability to synthesise complex issues, evaluate information, apply principles and techniques, and make professional judgements to arrive at informed decisions in relevant work situations.
The module mainly concentrates on the fundamental concepts and issues in identifying, measuring and controlling risk in a financial setting and the tools and techniques to measure and manage risk.
Moreover, the module is designed to enable students to critically examine the role played by financial management and corporate governance. This will require student to analyse, under a range of circumstances, whether or not a capital project adds value to a business, and also evaluate the theoretical and practical considerations underlying the financing decisions of a company.
The module will also discuss the tools and techniques of financial planning including working capital management and risk management.
The module aims to develop the student’s research and analytical skills, and knowledge of the Bloomberg terminal. Students will learn how to develop, implement, and monitor investment goals after considering the risk and return of both markets and investment vehicles.
In addition, to provide an extensive, detailed and critical knowledge and understanding of professional ethics in the banking industry and develop the practitioner’s skills and ability to make informed ethical and professional judgements in a highly regulated environment.

This module, as a ‘mental wealth’ initiative aims to develop a full range of skills, competences and experiences required for successful performance and practice in a range of potential careers. Your personal and professional development will be fueled by advancing your analytical, emotional, cultural, cognitive and social intelligences through taught and workshop activity primarily based on online learning and reflective practices.
The module will fuel your potential by introducing you to a wide range of approaches (including reflective skills, self-care and empathetic alertness) and equip you with the confidence, competencies and courage to lead.
This module provides the opportunity for you to demonstrate the ability to diagnose and investigate a complex business issue from a variety of perspectives, to locate the work within the body of contemporary knowledge, to learn from online learning platforms, to derive supportable conclusions and to make practical and actionable recommendations for change, improvement, or enhancement of current practice at individual , organisational and community level.
The aim of this module is to enable you to conduct a live applied business project. This could include a business simulation, Bloomberg project, project management report, or case study.

At least 20 years old
Academic Requirement
- Lower Second Class classification (2:2) from an undergraduate degree or equivalent qualification in
Business, Finance, Economics or in the Applied Mathematical Sciences with some Economics courses. - A non-graduate qualification for mature students who are at least 30 years old and with minimum 8 years of working experience
English Entry Requirement
For those candidates whose first language is not English, they are excepted to have:
- Overall IELTS 6.0 with a minimum of 6.0 in all areas.
- or the equivalent
Exemptions / Credit Transfer / Advanced Standing
Candidates who do not hold such qualifications (i.e.: formal qualifications which marginally fall short of the normal minimum entry requirements) and are at least 30 years old will be assessed as to their suitability through interview, and where necessary the taking of references. They should be compensated for by his/her relevant work experience provided that such candidates have held, for a minimum of eight years, a responsible position which is relevant to the Master’s degree to be pursued.
